Greenwich

a mean time

overcast

Greenwich today. We got up and going earlier than most days and caught the train to Bow Rd, where we connected onto the DLR to Island Gardens. The DLR has undergone some major expansions since we were last here. We walked across the Thames via the Greenwich Foot Tunnel, which was pretty cool. We came out at Greenwich Pier, and I was a bit disappointed to realise that the Cutty Sark and Gipsy Moth were both under wraps. The Cutty Sark is still being restored since a fire a couple of years ago, which I did know about, but I was still expecting to see something of it, but it was all behind a blue wall. A quick stop at Starbucks to get a warm drink was vital, and then we went on to do some shopping for souvenirs. After that we walked up through the village and into the park. It was beautiful covered in snow. We walked up the hill to the Observatory, but I don’t remember the hill being that steep before – I was knackered by the time I got to the top. We went into the observatory (free!) and wandered around. Saw some sights, even though we went through pretty quickly, and even managed to see the big telescope in the top dome. We were there at 1pm, so saw the big ball lift and drop, which I hadn’t seen before. We went back down the hill, and back into the village before finding lunch. Back onto the DLR and we headed home pretty early. It was cold today, though we haven’t had much wind to contend with, and no snow for a few days. We pick up the hire car on Thursday morning, so with an amended itinerary, we will be heading out. We have basically canned anything north of Birmingham, we may get to Nottingham, but York and Dalton, Chester and North Wales is pretty much impossible. Ah, well, next time!
